In this work, we report a thorough investigation of the reaction of phenols with aryldiazoacetates. Mechanistic studies using different spectroscopic methods and theoretical calculations suggest a hydrogen bond between phenol and aryldiazoacetates, which can be modulated by the phenol acidity. The pK(A) of phenol and therefore the hydrogen bond plays an important role in a subsequent photoinduced proton transfer reaction to give the formal O-H functionalization product of phenols.

Presented herein is a study of the conformation and reactivity of highly reactive thioglycoside donors. The structural studies have been conducted using NMR spectroscopy and computational methods. The reactivity of these donors has been investigated in bromine-promoted glycosylations of aliphatic and sugar alcohols. The persistent reservoir of cells latently infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-integrated proviral DNA necessitates lifelong suppressive antiretroviral therapy (ART). Epigenetic targeted compounds have shown promise as potential latency-reversing agents; however, these drugs have undesirable toxicity and lack specificity for HIV. We utilized a novel HEK293-derived FlpIn dual-reporter cell line, which quantifies specific HIV provirus reactivation (LTR promoter) relative to nonspecific host cell gene expression (CMV promoter), to identify the 5-substituted 2-acylaminothiazole hit class. Here, we describe the optimization of the hit class, defining the functionality necessary for HIV gene activation and for improving in vitro metabolism and solubility. The optimized compounds displayed enhanced HIV gene expression in HEK293 and Jurkat 10.6 latency cellular models and increased unspliced HIV RNA in resting CD4+ T cells isolated from HIV-infected individuals on ART, demonstrating the potential of the 2-acylaminothiazole class as latency-reversing agents.

A highly efficient Ni/N-C catalyst was synthesized by facile pyrolysis of a Ni-containing metal-organic framework (Ni-MOF), and its catalytic hydrogenolysis performance towards C-O bonds in lignin was evaluated in detail using diphenyl ether (DPE) as a model compound. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analyses show that the flower-like nanosheets of the Ni-MOF shrink, forming a loose and ordered spherical structure during pyrolysis. Under the optimal conditions, DPE was completely converted and the selectivity to monomers (benzene, cyclohexanol and cyclohexane) reached 99.1%. During the catalytic hydrogenolysis conversion (CHC) of DPE, the direct cleavage of the C-aromatic-O bond affording benzene and phenol is the major reaction pathway, and a low H2 pressure is crucial to increase the monomer selectivity. Furthermore, Ni/N-C-450 shows high hydrogenolysis activity for other lignin-derived aryl ethers, such as benzyl phenyl ether, dibenzyl ether, dinaphthalene ether, benzyl 2-naphthyl ether and 3-methoxyphenol.

The present study investigated the degradation of bisphenol A (BPA) from aqueous solution using Fe3O4/persulfate process. The effects of pH (3, 5, 7 and 11), persulfate (PS) concentrations (1, 2, 5 and 10 mM), Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticle doses (0.5, 1, 1.5 and 2 g/L), and contact time (5, 10, 20 and 30 min) on BPA removal were examined. The effect of all factors was significant (p < 0.05), and the optimal conditions were: pH value of 3, Fe3O4 dose of 2 g/L, BPA concentration of 0.1 mg/L, and contact time of 30 min. The BPA removal efficiency under optimal conditions was 98%. The results of this work indicate that Fe3O4 nanoparticles can be used as an effective catalyst and adsorbent for the removal of BPA from water and industrial wastewater. Analysis of by-products of BPA using GC-MS detected the presence of compounds with lower molecular weights (4-hydroxyacetophenone, 4-isopropenylphenol, benzoquinone and succinic acid) relative to BPA. In this report, SO3H-functionalized Carbon nanoparticles (Pine-SO3H) with high acid density have been synthesized by the thermal treatment of sulfuric acid with Pine-Cone as carbon-based at 180 degrees C in a sealed autoclave in a one-step procedure. The resulted Nanocatalyst was characterized by FT-IR, TGA, XRD, FE-SEM and elemental analysis (EA). The result of characterization was shown that the carbon-based acid is amorphous with polycyclic aromatic carbon sheets attached plentiful -OH, -COOH, and -SO3H groups. The catalytic activities of Pine-SO3H was investigated in the highly efficient synthesis of pyrano[2,3-c] pyrazole, amino-benzochromenes, amidoalkyl naphthol and 5-arylidene-2,4-thiazolidinedione derivatives. The application of Pine-SO3H in the synthesis offers several advantages such as simple procedure with an easy work-up, recoverable catalyst, mild condition, eco-friendliness, excellent yields, short reaction times and use of an inexpensive catalyst.

The kinetics of the photoelectrochemical mineralization of p-nitrophenol (PNP) and p-methoxyphenol (PMP) on rutile:anatase TiO2 nanotube electrodes (% rutile: 0, 16, and 20) has been studied. Oxidative photocurrent enhances with the increase of both the electrode potential and the rutile content. Time-resolved photoluminescence measurements reveal that incorporation of rutile into anatase nanotubes has effects on recombination dynamics. From measurements of electrical charge as a function of time under thin-layer conditions under potentiostatic control, it was determined that the oxidation of PNP and PMP follows the apparent Langmuir-Hinshelwood rate law. Chemical oxygen demand measurements confirmed total oxidation. The reaction rate parameters that define the kinetic constant (k) due to the reaction of hydroxyl radicals with adsorbed phenols and the thermodynamic constant (K) due to the adsorption of phenols with the electrode surface have been decoupled. The interaction of PNP with the surface of all TiO2 electrodes is highly favored, K(PNP) > K(PMP), resulting in a surface concentration of PNP considerably higher than that of PMP. The specific rate of the surface reaction for the transformation of phenols also increases, but the trend is inverse, that is, for all electrodes, k(PMP) > k(PNP). Understanding these kinetic tendencies can lead to better transformation of light in redox reactions.
