The morphology and crystal-plane effects of CeO2 materials (nanorods, octahedra, cubes, and particles) in gas-phase selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol were investigated. HRTEM, XPS and TPR analyses showed that CeO2 nanorods enclosed by {110} and {100} facets are richer in oxygen vacancies than nanocubes, octahedra and nanoparticles. Their catalytic activity towards the gas-phase selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol, however, followed the order nanorods > nanoparticles nano-octahedra > nanocubes, which was not fully consistent with the content of oxygen vacancies. Further characterization together with density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that the exposed crystal planes can not only determine the content of oxygen vacancies, but also influence the ability to abstract H, adsorb O2 and remove water. The combination of all these factors leads to a collective crystal-plane effect of ceria, and these results can help deepen our understanding of ceria surface chemistry.

Phosphite-based Au(i) catalytic systems containing an array of structurally diverse polyether-based regulation sites were designed and synthesised. These catalysts have been successfully tested in the Au(i)-catalysed C-H functionalisation of phenols and related derivatives with gold-carbenes derived from diazo compounds. Regulation of the steric congestion around the catalytic Au(i) centreviaion-dipole interactions with an external regulation agent led to an enhancement of both the activity and selectivity of the reaction. This new approach in supramolecular gold(i) catalysis has been applied to the derivatisation of an array of substituted phenols and related substrates and to the preparation of an advanced synthetic intermediate of the anticancer agent tamoxifen. The effects of the regulation agent on the selectivity and yield of the reaction have been studied and rationalised using DFT-D calculations.

Molecular oxygen is the most important green-oxidant due to its excellent properties. However, the effective utilization of molecular oxygen remains a major challenge in modern chemistry. Herein, we report the development a rapid, green and efficient microwave-assisted protocol for the air oxidation of boronic acids to phenols and alcohols under transition metal-free conditions. In the presence of KOH and DMSO, high yields of the expected phenols and alcohol were obtained with microwave-assistance, and a variety of functional groups were tolerated in this procedure. Notably, this transition metal-free method represents a breakthrough in both organic synthesis and green chemistry for the oxidative hydroxylation of boronic acids to phenols and alcohols.

beta-Lactams are used routinely to treat Staphylococcus aureus infections. However, the emergence of methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) renders them clinically precarious. We describe a class of cinnamonitrile adjuvants that restore the activity of oxacillin (a penicillin member of the beta-lactams) against MRSA. The lead adjuvants were tested against six important strains of MRSA, one vancomycin-intermediate S. aureus (VISA) strain, and one linezolid-resistant S. aureus strain. Five compounds out of 84 total compounds showed broad potentiation. At 8 mu M (E)-3-(5-(3,4-dichlorobenzy1)-2-(trifluoromethoxy)phenyl)-2-(methylsulfonyl)acrylonitrile (26) potentiated oxacillin with a >4000-fold reduction of its MIC (from 256 to 0.06 mg.L-1). This class of adjuvants holds promise for reversal of the resistance phenotype of MRSA.

4-Hydroxy-3-methyl-2(1H)-quinolone (1), a molecule known for a long time and recently discovered from a Brassicaceae plant Isatis tinctoria without providing sufficient evidence to support the structure, was isolated from a fermentation extract of Burkholderia sp. 3Y-MMP isolated from a soil by a Zn2+ enrichment culture. Detailed spectroscopic analyses by MS and NMR, combined with C-13 chemical shift comparison with literature values of the related compounds and a synthetic preparation of 1, allowed its first full NMR characterization and identification of 2-quinolone but not 2-quinolinol (2) as the preferred tautomer for this heterocyclic system. While the metal-chelating activity was negligible, compound 1 at 10 mu M, a concentration lower than that in liquid production cultures, quenched hydroxy radical-induced chemiluminescence emitted by luminol by 86%. Because some Burkholderia species are pathogenic to plants and animals, the above result suggests that 1 is a potential antioxidant to counteract reactive oxygen species-based immune response in the host organisms.

The reactions of 3-benzyl-1,5-ditosyl-1,3,5-triazapentane (1) and 3-benzyl-1,5-dimesityl-1,3,5-triazapentane (2) with one equivalent of Lappert’s germylene or stannylene (M[N(SiMe3)(2)](2), where M = Ge, Sn) produced germylenes and stannylenes of the general formula PhCH2N(CH2CH2NR)(2)M, where M = Ge, R = 4-MeC6H4SO2- (3); 2,4,6-Me3C6H2- (5); M = Sn, R = 4-MeC6H4SO2- (4); 2,4,6-Me3C6H2- (6), in satisfactory yields. The synthesized stannylenes exhibited very high (compound 4) and moderate (compound 6) activity as initiators for bulk polymerization of epsilon-caprolactone, resulting in the synthesis of high-molecular-weight polymers with relatively narrow molecular-weight distribution. An efficient silver-catalyzed para-selective amination and aminative dearomatization of phenols with azodicarboxylates was developed. It afforded the para-aminophenols or amino cyclohexadieneones from free phenols depending on whether it has a para-substituent. The reaction proceeded smoothly in water under simple and mild conditions, giving the highly selective products in good yields within a short reaction time. In this study, three eco-friendly, efficient, and convenient protocols have been reported for one-pot synthesis of 2,4,6-triaryl pyridine, 2-amino-3-cyanopyridine, and polyhydroquinoline derivatives using salicylic acid as a catalyst under solvent-free condition. The reported protocols offer several significant advantages such as the application of a nontoxic, neutral, and cheap catalyst, environmentally friendly conditions, the easy isolation of products by filtering, short reaction times, simple methodology, and good yields.

Here, we report the reaction between N-phenyl-o-phenylenediamine and pyrrole-2-carboxaldehyde to afford the N-phenyl-o-phenyl-enediiminopyrrole ligand {L-H2} in quantitative yield. A one-pot reaction between {L-H2} and diethylzinc (ZnEt2) in a 2:1 ratio afforded the homoleptic zinc metal complex [{L-H}(2)Zn] (1). The solid-state structures of ligand {L-H2} and zinc complex 1 were confirmed using X-ray crystallography. Further, complex 1 was used for chemoselective hydroboration of aldehydes and ketones in the presence of pinacolborane (HBpin) at ambient temperature to produce the corresponding boronate esters in high yield.

A Cd(II) coordination polymer based on a polytopic compartmental ligand was synthesized, and used as an efficient heterogeneous catalyst for the Knoevenagel reaction between benzaldehyde and malononitrile under mild reaction conditions. The solid catalyst was characterized using single crystal XRD, X-ray powder diffraction, SEM, TGA, UV diffuse reflectance, infrared spectroscopy and elemental analysis. The compound is a two-dimensional (2D) MOF with a grid structure. Topological analysis of the framework revealed that it is a 2,4-connected binodal net. The catalytic activity was tested between various benzaldehydes containing different substituents with malononitrile. The effect of reaction parameters such as solvent, time, reactant ratio and catalyst amount was investigated. Furthermore, the catalyst stability was examined through reusability experiments and it is observed that the catalyst can be recycled at least five times without significant drop in its activity.
