The isomalabaricanes comprise a large family of marine triterpenoids with fascinating structures that have been shown to be selective and potent apoptosis inducers in certain cancer cell lines. In this article, we describe the successful total syntheses of the isomalabaricanes stelletin A, stelletin E, and rhabdastrellic acid A, as well as the development of a general strategy to access other natural products within this unique family. High-throughput experimentation and computational chemistry methods were used in this endeavor. A preliminary structure-activity relationship study of stelletin A revealed the trans-syn-trans core motif of the isomalabaricanes to be critical for their cytotoxic activity.

ZnO thin films were deposited onto glass substrate for various deposition cycles by successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction method. Structural studies were confirmed that the films are polycrystalline with hexagonal wurtzite structure. SEM studies revealed the surface had closely packed spherical particles with pores. The transmission range was found to be above 75% and the band gap was calculated for all samples using optical studies. The changes in the oxidation state of ZnO thin film was studied using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The chemical compositions of ZnO were confirmed by FTIR spectrum. The improved crystalline of ZnO thin film (50 cycles) has been chosen for the fabrication of ammonia vapour sensor. The vapour sensing behaviour of the film was observed for various concentrations of ammonia at an optimized operating temperature of 200 degrees C. The lowest detection limit was found to be 1 ppm of ammonia vapour concentration.

We have designed a versatile reusable cooperative catalyst oxidation system, consisting of palladium nanoparticles and laccase with unprecedented reactivity. This biohybrid catalyst was synthesized by the stepwise immobilization of laccase as an enzyme and Pd as a nanometallic component into the same cavity of siliceous mesocellular foams (MCF). MCF and nanobiohybrid catalyst were characterized by BET, SAXS, SEM, EDX elemental mapping, ICP-OES, TEM, TGA, FT-IR, and XPS techniques and the stepwise immobilization of laccase enzyme and Pd onto MCF was evaluated through several compelling electrochemical studies. The present catalytic system exhibits high activity toward (i) aerobic oxidation of alcohols to the corresponding carbonyl compounds, (ii) aerobic oxidation of cyclohexanol and cyclohexanone to phenol and (iii) aerobic dehydrogenation of important N-heteocyclic compounds (tetrahydro quinazolines, quinazolonones, pyrazolines and 1,4-diydropyridines) in the presence of catalytic amount of hydroquinone (HQ) as mediator in phosphate buffer (0.1 M, pH 4.5, 4 mL)/THF (4%, 1 mL) as solvent under mild conditions. The immobilization of both oxygen-activating catalyst (laccase) and oxidizing catalyst (Pd) onto the same support makes the present catalyst system superior to other currently available heterogeneous palladium based catalytic aerobic oxidation systems. Geminal diboronates have attracted significant attention because of their unique structures and reactivity. However, benzofuran-, indole-, and benzothiophene-based benzylic gem-diboronates, building blocks for biologically relevant compounds, are unknown. A promising protocol using visible light and aryl iodides for constructing valuable building blocks, including benzofuran-, indole-, and benzothiophene-based benzylic gem-diboronates, via radical carbo-cyclization/gem-diborylation of alkynes with a high functional group tolerance is presented. The utility of these gem-diboronates has been demonstrated by a 10 g scale conversion, by versatile transformations, by including the synthesis of approved drug scaffolds and two approved drugs, and even by polymer synthesis. The mechanistic investigation indicates that the merging of the dinuclear gold catalyst (photoexcitation by 315-400 nm UVA light) with Na2CO3 is directly responsible for photosensitization of aryl iodides (photoexcitation by 254 nm UV light) with blue LED light (410-490 nm, lambda(max) = 465 nm) through an energy transfer (EnT) process, followed by homolytic cleavage of the C-I bond in the aryl iodide substrates.

Recent studies investigating the electrocatalytic properties of nitroxyl radicals (e.g. 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO)) for electrochemical alcohol oxidation have demonstrated that the thermodynamic equilibrium oxidation potential and the steric environments unique to each nitroxyl radical have significant implications for their electrocatalytic abilities for alcohol oxidation. However, as the catalytic cycle of the nitroxyl radical involves not only the production and use of the oxoammonium cation for alcohol oxidation but also the regeneration of the oxoammonium cation from the hydroxylamine, the mechanism and rate of the regeneration of the oxoammonium cation critically affect the overall rate of electrochemical nitroxyl radical-mediated alcohol oxidation. Currently, a detailed understanding of this important aspect is lacking. Herein, the factors that affect the regeneration pathways of the oxoammonium cation are systematically investigated, and the impact that the regeneration pathways have on the overall catalytic activity for electrochemical alcohol oxidation is demonstrated. In this study, 4-acetamido TEMPO and 2-azaadamantane-N-oxyl, which are on the opposite ends of the spectrum of nitroxyl radical derivatives in terms of thermodynamic driving force and steric effects, are used as example nitroxyl radicals. As such, the results and discussion provided in this study can be used as comprehensive guidelines to understand the catalytic activity and regeneration pathways of any TEMPO derivative or polycyclic nitroxyl radical during electrochemical alcohol oxidation.

Gecko-inspired microfibrillar adhesives have achieved great progress in microstructure design and adhesion improvement over the past two decades. Space applications nowadays show great interest in this material for the characteristics of reversible adhesion and universal van der Waals interactions. However, the impact of harsh environment of space on the performance of microfibrillar adhesives, especially the extreme low temperature, is rarely addressed. Herein, microfibrillar adhesives fabricated by phenyl containing polydimethylsiloxane (p-PDMS) elastomers with superior low-temperature reversible adhesion is proposed. p-PDMS elastomers are synthesized through one-pot anionic ring-opening copolymerization, and the resulting elastomers become non-crystallizable with excellent low-temperature elasticity. Low-temperature adhesion tests demonstrate that the adhesion strength of microfibrillar adhesives fabricated by p-PDMS elastomers can be well maintained to as low as -120 degrees C. In contrast, the adhesion strength of pure PDMS microfibrillar adhesive reduces more than 50% below its crystallization temperature. The low-temperature cyclic adhesion tests further demonstrate that p-PDMS microfibrillar adhesives exhibit superior reversible adhesion compared to that of PDMS microfibrillar adhesives, owing to the sustainable conformal contact and even distribution of loads over repeated cycles. This study provides a new fabrication strategy for microfibrillar adhesives, and is beneficial for the practical application of microfibrillar adhesives.

Strigolactones (SLs) are one of the plant hormones that control several important agronomic traits, such as shoot branching, leaf senescence, and stress tolerance. Manipulation of the SL biosynthesis can increase the crop yield. We previously reported that a triazole derivative, TIS108, inhibits SL biosynthesis. In this study, we synthesized a number of novel TIS108 derivatives. Structure-activity relationship studies revealed that 4-(2-phenoxyethoxy)-1-phenyl-2-(1H-1,2,4-triazol-1-yl)butan-1-one (KK5) inhibits the level of 4-deoxyorobanchol in roots more strongly than TIS108. We further found that KK5-treated Arabidopsis showed increased branching phenotype with the upregulated gene expression of AtMAX3 and AtMAX4. These results indicate that KK5 is a specific SL biosynthesis inhibitor in rice and Arabidopsis.
