The application of the pre-validated pharmacophore 2-(2-oxazolinyl) aniline as an innate directing group in the C-H etherification and amination of nicotinamides for the efficient synthesis of drug-and agrochemical- like molecules was determined. In this project, nano-MnO2@zeolite-Y (NMOZ) was successfully prepared via hydrothermal technique and its structure was confirmed using FT-IR, XRD, FE-SEM, EDX and BET analyses. MnO2 nanoparticles stabilized on zeolite-NaY were used as nanocatalyst for efficient solventless preparation of 3,4-disubstituted isoxazole-5(4H)-one scaffolds via one-pot three-component reaction of ethyl acetoacetate, hydroxylamine hydrochloride, and aromatic aldehydes at 100 degrees C. One of the advantages of this new method is the non-use of a metal oxidant such as KMnO4 (greener method) and the stabilization of MnO2 to the zeolite-Y surface via ion bonding. This causes the MnO2 not be leached from the zeolite during the processes of nanocatalyst recycling in organic reactions. This simple approach also has promising features as like as safe, inexpensive and recyclable nanocatalyst, solvent-free reaction, short reaction times, high to excellent yields, and easy isolation of the products.

Nature is abundant with multi-functional and efficient catalysts such as redox enzymes which scientists wish to emulate with synthetic catalysts. One approach is to tune molecular catalysts through metal-organic ligands but there are grand challenges of molecular catalysts for real applications in energy field. Here we demonstrate a robust inorganic construct based on metal-metal oxide-carbon triple junction nanostructures (ZrO2/Pd/carbon) that mimics the functions of enzymes for highly efficient proton transport. The metal oxide tunes the local acidic environment of the metal and improves its ability for proton transport, efficient adsorption of substrate, and accelerated electron transfer. Using electrocatalytic hydrogenation (ECH) of benzaldehyde as a model reaction, we show that the intrinsic activity of the metal toward hydrogenation reaction is improved by over 200 % on the triple junction nanostructured catalysts. This study demonstrates the potential of rational design of multicomponent nanostructured catalysts to achieve enzyme like properties in synthetic catalysts.

Bio-oils after hydrotreatment can still contain significant amount of phenols and cyclic olefins as the products of an incomplete deoxygenation. The removal of these compounds would be necessary to produce suitable components for automotive fuels. However, no routine method currently exists for the reliable determination of these groups in hydrotreated bio-oils (HBOs). In this paper, we analyzed 140 different pure oxygenates as model compounds using the bromine number method (ASTM D1159) observing that most compounds present in HBOs react with one equivalent of bromine. The determination of phenols using bromine number method in crude biooil is complicated especially by the presence of guaiacols and syringols that react with more than one equivalent of bromine and, thus, the obtained result is significantly overestimated. Further we optimized the chromatographic separation of hydrocarbons from HBOs for the selective determination of olefins content. As no other reactive compounds under the conditions of the method, besides phenols and olefins, were observed in HBOs, the difference between HBO bromine number (before hydrocarbons separation) and olefins content correspond to the total amount of phenols. The method was finally applied to 11 HBOs with different content of oxygen, providing a good correlation between phenols and oxygen content.

The growing interest in regulating flavored E-liquids must incorporate understanding of the flavoring profile of each E-liquid-which flavorings (flavoring chemicals) are present and at what concentrations not just focusing on the flavor on the label. We investigated the flavoring profile of 10 different flavored E-liquids. We assessed bronchial epithelial cell viability and apoptosis, phagocytosis of bacteria and apoptotic cells by macrophages after exposure to E-cigarette vapor extract (EVE). We validated our data in normal human bronchial epithelial cells (NHBE) and alveolar macrophages (AM) from healthy donors. We also assessed cytokine release and validated in the saliva from E-cigarette users. Increased necrosis/apoptosis (16.1-64.5% apoptosis) in 16HBE cells was flavor dependent, and NHBEs showed an increased susceptibility to flavors. In THP-1 differentiated macrophages phagocytosis was also flavor dependent, with AM also showing increased susceptibility to flavors. Further, Banana and Chocolate were shown to reduce surface expression of phagocytic target recognition receptors on alveolar macrophages. Banana and Chocolate increased IL-8 secretion by NHBE, whereas all 4 flavors reduced AM IL-1 beta secretion, which was also reduced in the saliva of E-cigarette users compared with healthy controls. Flavorant profiles of E-liquids varied from simple 2 compound mixtures to complex mixtures containing over a dozen flavorants. E-liquids with high benzene content, complex flavoring profiles, high chemical concentration had the greatest impacts. The Flavorant profile of E-liquids is key to disruption of the airway status quo by increasing bronchial epithelial cell apoptosis, causing alveolar macrophage phagocytic dysfunction, and altering airway cytokines.

A facile and general method for constructing carbon-heteroatom (C-P, C-O, C-S, and C-N) bonds via C-N cleavage of benzyl ammonium salts under transition-metal-free conditions was reported. The combination of t-BuOK and 18-crown-6 enabled a wide range of substituted benzyl ammonium salts to couple readily with different kinds of heteroatom nucleophiles, i.e. hydrogen phosphoryl compounds, alcohols, thiols, and amines. Good functional group tolerance was demonstrated. The scale-up reaction and one-pot synthesis were also successfully performed.

Biomass burning emits large amounts of phenols, which can partition into cloud/fog drops and aerosol liquid water (ALW) and react to form aqueous secondary organic aerosol (aqSOA). Triplet excited states of organic compounds (C-3*) are likely oxidants, but there are no rate constants with highly substituted phenols that have high Henry’s law constants (K-H) and are likely important in ALW. To address this gap, we investigated the kinetics of six highly substituted phenols with the triplet excited state of 3,4-dimethoxybenzaldehyde. Second-order rate constants at pH 2 are all fast, (2.6-4.6) x 10(9) M-1 s(-1), while values at pH 5 are 2-5 times smaller. Rate constants are reasonably described by a quantitative structure-activity relationship with phenol oxidation potentials, allowing rate constants of other phenols to be predicted. Triplet-phenol kinetics are unaffected by ammonium sulfate, sodium chloride, galactose (a biomass-burning sugar), or Fe(III). In contrast, ammonium nitrate increases the rate of phenol loss by making hydroxyl radicals, while Cu(II) inhibits phenol decay. Mass yields of aqueous SOA from triplet reactions are large and range from 59 to 99%. Calculations using our data along with previous oxidant measurements indicate that phenols with high KH can be an important source of aqSOA in ALW, with 3C* typically the dominant oxidant.

Ruthenium complexes are currently significant attention in medicinal chemistry as they offer various properties which make them an appropriate choice for drug development. Herein, a series of ruthenium(II)-p-cymene-2aryl-imidazo-1,10-phenanthroline derivatives have been prepared and characterised by elemental analysis, infrared, LC-mass and NMR techniques. The structural and chemical properties shows that Ru(II) complexes have got rigidity, planarity, aromaticity, hydrogen donating and accepting capability which aids both solubility and interaction with biomolecules. The binding strength of these complexes with DNA and BSA were found to be 10(4)-10(6) M-1. The competitive displacement of ethidium bromide (EtBr) from DNA in the presence of complex reveals an intercalation or groove binding further this was supported by viscosity and in-silico studies. The cytotoxicity study of these Ru(II) complexes were conducted with two cancer cell lines (MDA-MB-231 and HeLa) and one human embryonic kidney cells (HEK-293). The study revealed that [(eta(6)-p-cymene)RuCl (kappa(2)-N,N-2-(4-fluorophenyl)-1H-imidazo[4,5-f][1,10]Phenanthroline]center dot PF6 (4e), [(eta(6)-p-cymene)RuCl(kappa(2)-N,N-2-(4-bromophenyl)-1H-imidazo[4,5-f][1,10]Phenanthroline]center dot PF6 (4f) and [(eta(6)-p-cymene)RuCl(kappa(2)-N,N-2-(4-nitrophenyl)1H-imidazo[4,5-f][1,10]Phenanthro line]center dot PF6 (4g) were found exhibit least inhibitory concentration (IC50) and high selectivity with respect to HeLa and MDA-MB-231. Introduction: Previous studies have reported that maternal asthma increases the risk of preterm birth. We hypothesized that inflammatory reactions caused by allergic diseases might affect the uterine environment and, subsequently, perinatal outcomes. The objective of this study was to examine the associations between allergic features among mothers and preterm pregnancy outcomes in a nationwide birth cohort. Methods: We analyzed data from pregnant women obtained from the Japanese Environment and Children’s Study (JECS), a nationwide general birth cohort study. We used binomial and multinomial logistic regression models to examine the associations between maternal allergic features and preterm birth, threatened preterm labor (TPL), and preterm premature rupture of the membrane (PPROM). Results: A total of 97,683 pregnant women were included. Prevalence of preterm birth, TPL, and PPROM was 4.7, 19.6, and 1.2%, respectively. Maternal history of allergic diseases (asthma, allergic rhinitis, allergic conjunctivitis, food allergy, drug allergy, and contact dermatitis) increased the risk of TPL(adjusted odds ratio [aOR] = 1.11 [95% CI: 1.06-1.17], aOR = 1.12 [1.08-1.16], aOR = 1.10 [1.04-1.16], aOR = 1.17 [1.09-1.26], aOR = 1.35 [1.23-1.48], and aOR = 1.34 [1.20-1.49], respectively). Although some maternal allergic features showed a negative association with preterm birth, the variables affecting preterm birth differed according to the gestational age of the fetus (22-33 weeks vs. 34-36 weeks). There were no significant associations between maternal allergic features and PPROM. Conclusion: Maternal allergic disease, except atopic dermatitis, may increase the risk of TPL. Comorbidity of maternal allergic disorders and perinatal adverse outcomes require further investigation.
