In this work, nanomesoporous silica has been prepared from horsetail (Equisetum arvense), which is a medicinal plant, with high surface area. This natural silica has been applied as a support to prepare H3PW12O40 immobilized on aminated epibromohydrin-functionalized Fe3O4@SiO2 nanoparticles (Fe3O4@SiO2-EP-NH-HPA) as a highly powerful magnetically solid acid catalyst. Characterization of this nanocatalyst has been investigated by a variety of techniques such as FTIR, XRD, N-2 adsorption-desorption, TEM, SEM-EDX, TGA, VSM, ICP-OES and elemental analysis. This magnetically solid acid nanocatalyst has been successfully used for the one-pot green synthesis of pyrano[2,3-c]pyrazole derivatives in an aqueous medium at room temperature. The procedure resulted in structurally different pyrano[2,3-c]pyrazoles in excellent yields in very low reaction times. Moreover, this magnetically solid acid nanocatalyst can be simply recovered by an external magnetic field and reused for seven consecutive reaction cycles without significant loss of activity. Graphic abstract In this work, Fe3O4@SiO2-EP-NH-HPA as a highly powerful magnetically solid acid nanocatalyst based on natural silica which was extracted from a medicinal plant was prepared and characterized using various techniques. The activity of the new catalyst was tested for the synthesis of pyrano[2,3-c]pyrazole derivatives.

A full understanding of changes of the microbiome and metabolome during Napier grass silage in relation to aerobic exposure can improve the nutritional value and extend the aerobic stability of this important feed in tropical and subtropical regions. The round bale silage of Napier grass was prepared with deionized water (control) and screened strains Lactobacillus rhamnosus LR753 (LR753) and L. buchneri 40788 (LB). Silages were stored at ambient temperature (30-40 degrees C) for 60 days, followed by 2 and 4 days of aerobic exposure. Strains LB and LR753 significantly improved aerobic stability (>84 h vs. 18 h of control) of baled Napier grass silage by inhibiting the growth of Saccharomycetales as for the higher production of acetic acid (P < 0.05). Weissella and Issatchenkia spp. were the dominant bacteria and fungi in 60-day silage, respectively. LC-MS/MS detected a total of 426 metabolites throughout ensiling and aerobic exposure. With the decrease of Weissella spp. and the increase of Acetobacter spp., the metabolites associated with both were mainly odor-related (3-methylbutanoic acid, isoquinoline, and cuminaldehyde) and amines (tryptamine and tyramine) in control silage, while more antimicrobial activity metabolites were found in strains LB and LR753-treated silage (methylbutanoic acid, 1,2-propanediol, and tiglic acid). Screened local strain LR753 showed a promising potential for improving silage fermentation and aerobic stability of Napier grass. The present study indicates that adequately describing the microbiome and metabolome of silages during fermentation and aerobic exposure can improve ensiling practices and the screening of silage inoculants that act synergistically with the natural microbiome of the forage in hot and humid areas. Since 30 years, liquid crystalline elastomers (LCEs) have been attracting the attention of many researchers thanks to their anisotropic molecular structure which allows them to build up artificial muscles. Possible applications span from soft robotics to biomedical or tunable optical devices. The power of thiol-yne click chemistry was recently demonstrated in the preparation of smart polymers, in particular LCEs, in which the mesogenic units are incorporated both in the main-chain and as pendant groups. To enrich the library of available LCE materials, in this work, several liquid crystalline dithiols and alkynes have been synthesized and copolymerized to obtain elastomers with different thermomechanical properties. The architecture of the main chain was found to play a prominent role in modulating the clearing point in a range of 60 degrees C, whereas only a minor contribution is given by the mesogens in the side chain. On the other hand, the mechanical response resulted highly sensitive to fine details of the side-chain structure. Accordingly, the present study not only improves the basic understanding of the chemical-physical properties of LCEs but paves the way to the preparation of multicomponent actuators able to deform in different temperature ranges, thus ultimately leading to complex soft robotic operations.

Chlorosilanes are versatile reagents in organic synthesis and material science. A mild pathway is now reported for the quantitative conversion of hydrosilanes to silyl chlorides under visible-light irradiation using neutral eosin Y as a hydrogen-atom-transfer photocatalyst and dichloromethane as a chlorinating agent. Stepwise chlorination of di- and trihydrosilanes was achieved in a highly selective fashion assisted by continuous-flow micro-tubing reactors. Metal-catalysed ortho-directed C-H functionalization usually faces selectivity issues in the competition between mono- and disubstitution processes. We report herein the ruthenium-catalysed N-directed C-H monoarylation of arylpyrazoles with a selectivity of up to 96% or that generally reaches values above 80%. Extending the applications of Photoremovable Protecting Groups (PPGs) to cage phenols has generally met with unusually complex PPG byproducts. In this study, we demonstrate that thep-hydroxyphenacyl (pHP) cage for both simple and complex phenolics, including tyrosine, dispenses free phenols. With the simpler unsubstituted phenols, the reaction is governed by their Bronsted Leaving Group ability. On the other hand, the byproducts of the cage vary with these phenols. For the more acidic phenols the cage byproduct follows the Favorskii rearrangement to formp-hydroxyphenylacetic acid whereas for the weaker phenols other reactions such as reduction and hydrolysis begin to emerge. When the photolysis is conducted in octa acid (OA) containers, non-Favorskii, unrearranged fragments of the cage and other byproducts arise.

An oxidative trifunctionalization of aryl alkynoates has been devised via the chalcogenide radical triggered intramolecular 1,4-aryl migration/decarboxylation cascade to prepare 1,1-dichalcogenide tetrasubstituted alkenes in high yields (up to 98 %). The effect of catalyst restructuring on the polydopamine-supported Pd catalyzed transfer hydrogenation of ethyl 4-nitrobenzoate and the catalytic hydrogenation of (E)-2-methyl-2-butenoic acid is reported. Transmission electron microscopy investigation of different catalyst pre-treatment and reaction conditions revealed high catalytic activity in both reactions unless drastic aggregation of the active metal occurred. In the transfer hydrogenation reaction aggregation was primarily dependent on the H-source used, while in the catalytic hydrogenation additives in combination with the reductive environment led to extensive Pd aggregation and thus decreased catalytic activity. The enantioselective hydrogenation of (E)-2-methyl-2-butenoic acid showed increased enantioselectivity and decreased conversion with increased particle size.

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) cause peptic lesions in the gastrointestinal mucosa by inhibiting the cyclooxygenase-1 (COX-1) enzyme. Selective COX-2 inhibition causes decreased side effects over current NSAIDs. Therefore, the studies about selective inhibition of COX-2 enzyme are very important for new drug development. The design, synthesis and biological activity evaluation of novel derivatives bearing thiazolylhydrazine-methyl sulfonyl moiety as selective COX-2 inhibitors were aimed in this paper. The structures of synthesized compounds were assigned using different spectroscopic techniques such as H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR and HRMS. In addition, the estimation of ADME parameters for all compounds was carried out using in silico process. The evaluation of in vitro COX-1/COX-2 enzyme inhibition was applied according to the fluorometric method. According to the enzyme inhibition results, synthesized compounds showed the selectivity against COX-2 enzyme inhibition as expected. Compounds 3a, 3e, 3f, 3g, 3i and 3j demonstrated significant COX-2 inhibition potencies. Among them, compound 3a was found to be the most effective derivative with an IC50 value of 0.140 +/- 0.006 mM. Moreover, it was seen that compound 3a displayed a more potent inhibition profile at least 12-fold than nimesulide (IC50 = 1.684 +/- 0.079 mu M), while it showed inhibitory activity at a similar rate of celecoxib (IC50 = 0.132 +/- 0.005 mu M). Molecular modelling studies aided in the understanding of the interaction modes between this compound and COX-2 enzyme. It was found that compound 3a had a significant binding property. In addition, the selectivity of obtained derivatives on COX-2 enzyme could be explained and discussed by molecular docking studies. (C) 2020 Elsevier Masson SAS. All rights reserved.

In this study, we examined the mode of metabolism of food odorant molecules in the human nasal/oral cavity in vitro and in vivo. We selected 4 odorants, 2-furfurylthiol (2-FT), hexanal, benzyl acetate, and methyl raspberry ketone, which are potentially important for designing food flavors. In vitro metabolic assays of odorants with saliva/nasal mucus analyzed by gas chromatography mass spectrometry revealed that human saliva and nasal mucus exhibit the following 3 enzymatic activities: (i) methylation of 2-FT into furfuryl methylsulfide (FMS); (ii) reduction of hexanal into hexanol; and (iii) hydrolysis of benzyl acetate into benzyl alcohol. However, (iv) demethylation of methyl raspberry ketone was not observed. Real-time in vivo analysis using proton transfer reaction-mass spectrometry demonstrated that the application of 2-FT and hexanal through 3 different pathways via the nostril or through the mouth generated the metabolites FMS and hexanol within a few seconds. The concentration of FMS and hexanol in the exhaled air was above the perception threshold. A cross-adaptation study based on the activation pattern of human odorant receptors suggested that this metabolism affects odor perception.These results suggest that some odorants in food are metabolized in the human nasal mucus/saliva, and the resulting metabolites are perceived as part of the odor quality of the substrates. Our results help improve the understanding of the mechanism of food odor perception and may enable improved design and development of foods in relation to odor.
