The gram-scale synthesis of important flavoring ketones via alkylation of acetoacetic ester on substituted benzylic carbon followed by decarboxylation using a heterogeneous, commercial, solid acid catalyst is reported. The flavoring ketones were synthesized by the alkylation of acetoacetic ester, which proceeds through an S(N)1-type reaction to generate an alkylated (beta-ketoester) intermediate at the benzylic carbon, which is decarboxylated under the acidic condition. Among the solid acid catalysts used, Amberlyst-15 was found to be the best catalyst under the solvent-free condition. This protocol was successfully employed for the synthesis of various flavoring ketones such as raspberry ketone and ginger ketone with almost complete conversion and 82% isolated yield. The para-donating groups on the benzylic alcohol showed a high rate of reaction. The catalyst was easily recovered and reused 6 times without losing its activity and selectivity. Moreover, this reaction was demonstrated at a 10 g scale, which implicated the potential applicability of the protocol in the industry.

alpha-Methylene-delta-valerolactone (MVL) is a bifunctional monomer comprising of a highly stable six-membered delta-valerolactone ring and highly reactive C(sic)C bond. Previously, the vinyl-addition polymerization (VAP) product, namely P(MVL)(VAP), has been formed exclusively. In this study, this conventional chemoselectivity is reversed, wherein organic catalysts are used to enable the first ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of MVL, exclusively affording a metal-free, unsaturated polyester, namely P(MVL)(ROP). This challenging goal is achieved by investigating different catalysts, initiators, and reaction conditions. In addition, the formation of two polymers, namely P(MVL)(ROP) and P(MVL)(VAP), is easily regulated by varying the polymerization solvent. The resulting P(MVL)(ROP) can be easily post-functionalized to form crosslinked or sulfurized materials; notably, it can be almost completely converted into its monomer thermochemically.

We studied morphological changes in a quasi-two-dimensional Langmuir film of low molar mass poly(L-lactide) upon increasing the surface density, starting from randomly distributed molecules to a homogeneous monolayer of closely packed molecules, followed by nucleation and growth of mesoscopic, three-dimensional clusters from an overcompressed monolayer. The corresponding nucleation density of mesoscopic clusters within the monolayer can be tailored through variation of the rate of compression. For a given surface density and temperature, the nucleation probability was found to increase linearly with the rate of compression, allowing to adjust the density of mesoscopic clusters over nearly 2 orders magnitude.

A facile and practical approach for the difluoromethylation of aliphatic alcohols with an S-(difluoromethyl)sulfonium salt was developed. A wide variety of alcohols with broad functional groups are compatible to furnish the corresponding alkyl difluoromethyl ethers in good to excellent yields under mild reaction conditions. Control experiments and DFT computational studies suggest that the difluoromethylation of alcohols mainly proceeds via a difluorocarbene pathway involving a five-membered transition state with the participation of water, whose crucial role in this reaction was also elucidated by control experiments.

Propolis also known as bee glue or bee resin is a resinous mixture of bee saliva or bee wax and exudate from tree trunks and flowers, produced by honeybees. The composition of propolis varies depending on the vegetation the bees can access. It is therefore expected that propolis obtained from various localities may have different chemical profiles. In this study, the headspace volatiles of propolis (n = 39) collected from various locations in South Africa (Gauteng, Northern Cape and Western Cape Provinces) were explored for the first time using GCxGC-ToF-MS. Several GCxGC parameters were optimised including; incubation time, temperature and modulation period. Multivariate data analysis techniques (principal component and hierarchical cluster analyses) were applied on the GCxGC-ToF-MS data to investigate trends and clustering patterns within propolis samples. The results demonstrated that headspace volatiles of propolis varied between locations. The volatile profiles were dominated by monoterpenes such as alpha-pinene (1.2-46.5%), beta-pinene (2.0-21.8%), dihydrosabinene (trace-17.8%), limonene (trace-11.6%), p-cymene (0.15.3%), 1,8-cineole (0.1-11.0%), 2,7-dimethyl-3-octen-5-yne (trace-11.7%), E-beta-ocimene (trace-17.8%), octanal (trace-12.9%), styrene (trace-13.5%) and alpha-thujene (trace-11.0%). Principal component analysis revealed chemical variation within propolis from the various locations. The heatmap of the averages revealed dehydrosabinene, isopropentyltoluene, p-cymene, acetophenone and alpha-thujene as chemical markers for the Northern Cape propolis, while lambda-terpinene, propanoic acid, furfural, 2-methoxy benzyl alcohol and hexanoic acid methylester were filtered out as markers for Gauteng propolis. The propolis samples originating from the Western Cape Province were dominated by prenal, cinnamaldehyde styrene, 1,8-cineole, decanal, prenyl acetate and butanoic acid. Using GCxGC-ToF-MS in combination with chemometrics, it was possible to profile headspace volatile constituents of propolis and further identify marker compounds that differentiate propolis from various provinces in South Africa. Propylene oxide (PO) is polymerized by metal-free ring-opening polymerization (ROP) at 25 degrees C using N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) and triethylborane (Et3B) as a bicomponent catalytic system. Poly(propylene oxide)s with predictable molar mass up to 60 000 g.mol(-1) and low dispersity (D<1.10) were obtained without the occurrence of undesirable transfer reaction to the monomer. In presence of an alcohol as the initiator, the ROP of PO follows an anionic mechanism assisted by monomer activation improving the efficiency of NHCs for the polymerization of substituted epoxides. Et3B is involved both in the formation of a complexed active center and in the activation of PO. Interestingly, dihydroxytelechelic PPOs can be readily synthesized not only using 1,4-benzenedimethanol but also water, both serving as difunctional initiators. Block copolyethers are also prepared by PPO chain extension experiments. All (co)polyethers have been thoroughly characterized by H-1 NMR spectroscopy, SEC and MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry as means to elucidate the reaction mechanisms involved in this chemistry. The aim of the study was to establish the influence of a co-precipitation agent (i.e., NaOH-immediate precipitation; hexamethylenetetramine/urea-gradual precipitation and growth of nanostructures) on the properties and catalytic activity of as-synthesized Au-CeO2 nanocomposites. All catalysts were fully characterized with the use of XRD, nitrogen physisorption, ICP-OES, SEM, HR-TEM, UV-vis, XPS, and tested in low-temperature oxidation of benzyl alcohol as a model oxidation reaction. The results obtained in this study indicated that the type of co-precipitation agent has a significant impact on the growth of gold species. Immediate co-precipitation of Au-CeO2 nanostructures with the use of NaOH allowed obtainment of considerably smaller and more homogeneous in size gold nanoparticles than those formed by gradual co-precipitation and growth of Au-CeO2 nanostructures in the presence of hexamethylenetetramine or urea. In the catalytic tests, it was established that the key factor promoting high activity in low-temperature oxidation of benzyl alcohol was size of gold nanoparticles. The highest conversion of the alcohol was observed for the catalyst containing the smallest Au particle size (i.e., Au-CeO2 nanocomposite prepared with the use of NaOH as a co-precipitation agent).

Activation of disulfides with N-halogen succinimide in the presence of TEMPO allows insertion reaction by an isocyanide, the product of which can further accept a wide range of nucleophiles for the generation of isothioureas and related molecular moieties. This new procedure overcomes previous methods that accept essentially only aryl amines as the third nucleophilic component. The diverse nucleophiles usable in our new protocol make this approach a general method for de novo synthesis of many S-containing heterocycles.

Herein we report, a single-pot multistep conversion of inactivated carboxylic acids to various N-containing compounds using a common synthetic methodology. The developed methodology rendered the use of carboxylic acids as a direct surrogate of primary amines, for the synthesis of primary ureas, secondary/tertiary ureas, O/S-carbamates, benzoyl ureas, amides, and N-formyls, exploiting the Curtius reaction. This approach has a potential to provide a diversified library of N-containing compounds, starting from a single carboxylic acid, based on the selection of the nucleophile.

Volatile profiles of oat-based foods are mainly analyzed on the oat flakes and porridge as snack or breakfast, whereas the volatile characteristics of the traditional Chinese oat meal (TCOM), a popular main food in some regions of northern China, with special strong aroma, are not known. Here, we compared the volatile profiles from headspace solid phase microextraction gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis of oat porridge (OP) and TCOM, which were of different processing and cooking methods, from those of different cultivars, and analyzed the effect of cultivation locations on oat volatile features. Apart from the 35 volatiles shared by OP and TCOM, there were 23 and 24 volatiles specific to OP and TCOM, respectively, with the later showing more toasting and frying-related volatiles due to the dry frying process of the grains before milling. Principle component analysis of the volatiles of OP and TCOM from 16 cultivars showed that they were clustered into two groups, and four cultivars were clustered together, independent of processing and cooking methods. The oat volatile profiles of cultivars grown in three regions of north China were dependent on the cultivation locations rather than cultivars, regardless of OP or TCOM, with those from Datong of Shanxi Province and Zhangjiakou of Hebei Province clustered together. The location effect could be due to significant less precipitation in the two regions above than the other region Ulanqab of Inner Mongolia. Practical Application The volatile compounds in oat are closely related to cultivation regions, which could be applied as a key factor by oat producers for marketing. The four cultivars showed similar and stable volatile profiles, which could be used as reference cultivars for breeding of high-quality oat with better flavor.
