A series of zirconium-terephthalate UiO-66 metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) containing partially uncoordinated zirconium sites (Zr-UC) were synthesized, finely characterized by complementary physico-chemical techniques, and employed to catalyze the oxidative dehydrogenation of alcohols in the presence oftert-butyl hydroperoxide (TBHP). These sites were two-fold: bulk Zr(UC)sites created by reducing the content of terephthalate linkers within the framework and intrinsic Zr(UC)sites existing on the external surface of undefective UiO-66 crystals. The activity of both sites was evidenced by the linear dependency taking place between the activity and either the missing linkers or external surface area. Combining in one UiO-66 crystal a high density of Zr(UC)sites within the bulk and a high external surface area enabled the performances of the catalysts in alcohol dehydrogenation to be maximized, making the oxidation of benzyl alcohol over 90% at mild temperature (T= 40 degrees C) after 2 h of reaction possible. More challenging secondary alcohols were also oxidized. The formation of Lewis acid sites at the inorganic nodes was monitored by FTIR spectroscopy of adsorbed CO. The presence of bulk and/or external Zr(UC)sites was further disclosed by the observation on hydrated samples of solid-state(1)H NMR signals, corresponding to the protons of terminal mu(1)-OH moieties capping the Zr(UC)sites. Interestingly, two distinct NMR signals corresponding to the terminal mu(1)-OH moieties of bulk and surface Zr(UC)sites were identified. Finally, a mechanism of alcohol dehydrogenation using TBHP was proposed relying on the concomitant coordination of benzyl alcohol and TBHP onto the two adjacent Zr(UC)sites at the zirconium cornerstones.

Employing photo-energy to drive the desired chemical transformation has been a long pursued subject. The development of homogeneous photoredox catalysts in radical coupling reactions has been truly phenomenal, however, with apparent disadvantages such as the difficulty in separating the catalyst and the frequent requirement of scarce noble metals. We therefore envisioned the use of a hyper-stable III-V photosensitizing semiconductor with a tunable Fermi level and energy band as a readily isolable and recyclable heterogeneous photoredox catalyst for radical coupling reactions. Using the carbonyl coupling reaction as a proof-of-concept, herein, we report a photo-pinacol coupling reaction catalyzed by GaN nanowires under ambient light at room temperature with methanol as a solvent and sacrificial reagent. By simply tuning the dopant, the GaN nanowire shows significantly enhanced electronic properties. The catalyst showed excellent stability, reusability and functional tolerance. All reactions could be accomplished with a single piece of nanowire on Si-wafer.

Oxidation of benzyl alcohol is one of the industrial reactions utilized to produce chlorine-free benzaldehyde. Interestingly, supported gold nanoparticle catalysts are efficient towards the oxidation reaction of alcohol without involving any solvents, hence following the terms of green technology. In this study, nanoparticles of bimetallic gold palladium supported on TiO2 were synthesized using the sol-immobilization method. The catalysts were structurally characterized using X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Transition Electron Microscopy (TEM), and Brunauer Emmett Teller (BET) instruments to get insight into the synergistic effect between both Au and Pd. The catalytic activities of the prepared catalysts were evaluated towards the oxidation of benzyl alcohol over tertbutyl hydroperoxide (TBHP). The results obtained from the catalytic evaluation of the prepared catalysts indicated that 0.5 wt% Au-0.5 wt% Pd/TiO2 is the best catalyst among other ratios with a 3.1 +/- 0.8 nm particle size and the TEM results reveal the consistency value of a particle for each Au Pd ratio. The prepared catalyst consists of 0.50 wt% Au and 0.50 wt% Pd/TiO2 which exhibited remarkably enhanced catalytic activity (>19%) and selectivity of benzaldehyde (80%) when compared to another metal loading of the Au Pd catalyst. The reusability of the prepared catalyst was evaluated more than five times, and the results indicated minimal loss in activity where a low concentration of gold was leached (0.05 mg/L) under optimal reaction conditions.

A highly chemoselective transesterification of methyl (meth)acrylates catalyzed by sterically demanding 2,6-di-tert-butyl-4-methylphenol-derived NaOAr or Mg(OAr)(2) was developed. The desired transesterification proceeded without the undesired Michael additions under mild reaction conditions at 25 degrees C, and various primary and secondary alcohols, diols, triol, and tetraol on a scale of up to 10 mmol could provide the corresponding functionalized acrylates in high yields. An efficient heterogeneous palladium-catalyzed transfer hydrogenolysis of primary, secondary, and tertiary benzylic alcohols using formic acid as hydrogen source has been developed. The resulting hydrocarbon products were obtained in excellent yields. Moreover, the system exhibits high chemoselectivity, reacting only with the hydroxy groups in the presence of other functional groups, and excellent recyclability.

Titanium and its alloy are widely used in osteointegration. However, osteogenic activity requires enhancements in order to meet clinical needs. To enhance the osteogenic activity of titanium, human recombined bone morphogenetic protein 2 (rhBMP-2) was immobilized on a titanium surface through self-assembly driven by electrostatic interaction. Pure titanium foil (10 mm in diameter and 0.3 mm thickness) was coated with gold nanoparticles (TA) by magnetron sputtering, and then the gold dots were decorated with negatively charged polymer (TA/BPP) in order to generate positively charged rhBMP-2 complex (TA/BPP/BMP-2) on the surface. The surface characteristics and the bioactivity and osteogenic activity of the surface-modified titanium were detected. The results showed that rhBMP-2 was successfully complexed on the titanium surfaces. The zeta potential of TA surfaces decreased after contacting with BPP solutions but rebounded after rhBMP-2 coating. The loading efficiency of rhBMP-2 reached 83.4% +/- 2.02%, and the amount of rhBMP-2 released at physiological pH conditions was minimum and increased at extreme acidic conditions. The osteogenic capability was significantly elevated when MC3T3-E1 cells were cultured on TA/BPP/BMP-2 rather than other surfaces. In conclusion, rhBMP-2 can be successfully immobilized on titanium surfaces by electrostatic adsorption using negative polymer, which results in enhanced bioactivity, osteogenic capability in vitro.

Nickel transition-metal catalysts are important materials which are widely used in (de)hydrogenation reactions. Typical Ni-II catalysts adopt a square planar geometry and a low-spin state owing to their d(8) electronic configuration. Here, we describe a mechanistic investigation of a novel octahedral Ni-II catalyst with a paramagnetic nature catalysing the alpha-alkylation of amides. Both non-bifunctional and bifunctional pathways were considered. In addition, we clarified the superiority of the high-spin state by comparing the geometries, valence electronic configurations, and rate-limiting energy barriers of the high- and low-spin states. Our results indicate that the novel octahedral nickel catalyst favours the bifunctional pathway and tends to maintain a high-spin state throughout the reaction due to the N-arm ligand. This computational study suggests that the spin state has the potential to influence the catalyst structure and reaction mechanism. Furthermore, these findings present novel insights for the design of Ni-II catalysts with high-spin states.

Air-stable, easy to prepare, homoleptic cobalt(II) complexes bearing pendant-modified phenoxyimine ligands were synthesized and determined. The complexes exhibited high catalytic performance for reducing aldehydes and ketones via catalytic hydrosilylation, where a hydrosilane and a catalytic amount of the cobalt(H) complex were added under base-free conditions. The reaction proceeded even in the presence of excess water, and excellent functional-group tolerance was observed. Subsequent hydrolysis gave the alcohol in high yields. Moreover, H2O had a critical role in activation of the Co(II) catalyst with hydrosilane. Several additional results also indicated that the cobalt(II) center acts as an active catalyst in the hydrosilylation of aldehydes and ketones.

Twenty-nine nucleoside analogues have been synthesized and evaluated in a cell based assay for their ability to activate the human Stimulator of Interferon Genes (hSTING), a key protein of the innate immune defense. Some 6-O-alkyl nucleoside analogues activate hSTING without associated cytotoxicity. SAR and combination studies were performed to decipher possible activation mechanism.
