Most Chinese viticulture regions feature a continental monsoon climate with hot-wet summers and dry-cold winters, giving grapes markedly different growing environments compared to the Mediterranean or oceanic climates. This study investigated the influence of continental climates on the volatile compounds of Vitis vinifera L. cv. Cabernet Sauvignon from five Chinese viticulture regions and the relationship between meteorological metrics and volatile concentrations in the 2014 and 2015 vintages. Grape berries from the climatically similar Wujiaqu (WJQ) and Yuquanying (YQY) regions had similar 6/9-carbon (C6/C9) compound and norisoprenoid contents. Berries from the Yantai (YT) and Jingyang (JY) regions with higher temperature and humidity had higher norisoprenoid contents than those from WJQ and YQY regions. Hierarchical clustering analysis showed that the vintage effect on grape volatile profiles prevailed over the regional effect. Grape berries from climatically similar WJQ and YQY regions exhibited similar volatile profiles and from the Deqin(DQ) region with a specific terroir showed significantly different volatile profiles from those of other regions. Pearson correlation analysis showed that (E)-beta-damascenone, beta-ionone, hexanal, 2-hexanol, (Z)-3-hexenol and (E)-2-hexenol were closely associated with minimum and maximum temperature, average relative humidity, sunshine duration and frost-free days, suggesting that these compounds might comprise a signature for distinguishing the volatile profiles of grape berries from different regions. This study would enhance our understanding of grape responses to continental monsoon climate through the accumulation of volatiles.

Simple expressions are presented to determine if a binary system will exhibit a minimum or maximum boiling azeotrope using conventional free energy calculations using molecular simulation or electronic structure calculations in a continuum solvent. The expressions compare the solvation free energy of each component at infinite dilution relative to itself, requiring four total solvation free energy calculations per binary system. The solvation free energies can be related to intermolecular interactions and, therefore, shed insight into why an azeotrope occurs. The application of the expressions is demonstrated for 2366 binary systems using solvation free energies computed using electronic structure calculations in the SM12, SM8, and SMD universal solvent models. The overall success rate for predicting the correct phase behavior was 0.718, 0.711, and 0.685 for SM12, SM8, and SMD, respectively.

Graphene oxide, the most prominent carbocatalyst for several oxidation reactions, has severe limitations due to the overstoichiometric amounts required to achieve practical conversions. Graphene acid, a well-defined graphene derivative selectively and homogeneously covered by carboxylic groups but maintaining the high electronic conductivity of pristine graphene, sets new activity limits in the selective and general oxidation of a large gamut of alcohols, even working at 5 wt% loading for at least 10 reaction cycles without any influence from metal impurities. According to experimental data and first principles calculations, the selective and dense functionalization with carboxyl groups, combined with excellent electron transfer properties, accounts for the unprecedented catalytic activity of this graphene derivative. Moreover, the controlled structure of graphene acid allows shedding light upon the critical steps of the reaction and regulating precisely its selectivity toward different oxidation products.

Urea formaldehyde resin-coated epoxy resin microcapsules were prepared by two-step in situ polymerization. The effects of five factors on the yield, coverage rate, repair rate, and morphology of the microcapsules were investigated by five factors and four levels of orthogonal test. These five factors were the mass ratio of the core to the wall material (Wcore:Wwall), the mass ratio of the emulsifier to the core material (Wemulsifier:Wcore), stirring rate, deposition time, and mass ratio of the emulsifier solution to the core material (Wemulsifier solution:Wcore). The ideal technological level of microcapsule synthesis was determined. According to the results of the range and variance of yield, coverage rate, and repair rate, the comprehensive properties of microcapsules became ideal. At this time, the Wcore:Wwall was 0.8 : 1, Wemulsifier:Wcore was 1 : 100, stirring rate was 600 r/min, deposition time was 32 h, and Wemulsifier solution:Wcore was 8 : 1. When the concentration of microcapsules in the epoxy resin was 10.0%, the self-repair rate was the best and the repair rate was 114.77%. This study is expected to provide a reference value for the preparation of a microcapsule self-healing technology and lay a foundation for the subsequent development of self-healing materials.

Binary organocatalytic ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of N-Boc-1,4-oxazepan-7-one (OxP(BOC)) is proposed as a versatile method to generate metal-free poly(amine-co-ester)s and the corresponding biodegradable polycationic homo/block (co)polymers. Optimization experiments with different organocatalysts, including 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene (DBU), 1,5,7-triazabicyclo[4.4.0]dec-5-ene (TBD), DBU/1-(3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)-3-cyclohexylthiourea (TU1), and phosphazene/thiourea, revealed that t-Bu-P-4/TU1 leads to a fast and controlled/living ROP with benzyl alcohol (BnOH) as an initiator and thus allows the formation of well-defined poly(amine-co-ester)s with high molecular mass (M-n,M-SEC up to 38.8 kg mol(-1)) and narrow dispersity. Well-defined poly(N-Boc-1,4-oxazepan-7-one)-based diblock copolymers were also synthesized successfully via the controlled/living ROP, regardless of whether hydrophilic poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) or hydrophobic polycaprolactone (PCL) was used as a macroinitiator. After treatment with trifluoroacetic acid, the corresponding water-soluble polycationic homopolymer, as well as the hydrophilic (PEG -based copolymer) and amphiphilic (PCL-based copolymer) polycationic diblock copolymers, was obtained. Dynamic light scattering in water and transmission electron microscopy analyses revealed that both polycationic copolymers self-assembled spontaneously to nanostructures; the hydrophilic block copolymer formed spherical nanoparticles, while the amphiphilic one formed rod-shaped nanoparticles.

Silver and palladium nanoparticles anchored to the core-shell Fe3O4@SiO2@Al2O3 were successfully synthesized based on MIL(Al)96 MOF. The nanocomposites, 15-20 nm in size, exhibited high catalytic activity for selective aerobic oxidation of alcohols (even aliphatic alcohols) to the corresponding carbonyl compounds at room temperature without addition of any other additives. In this regard, the Fe3O4@SiO2@Al2O3/Pd,Ag exhibited more catalytic activity than the others. The cytotoxic effect of nanocomposites was tested in-vitro against MCF-7 human breast cancer cells by MTT assay. The results showed that all synthesized nanocomposites will be promising and potential as anticancer agents, with sample Fe3O4@SiO2@Al2O3 being the most cytotoxic after 24 and 48 h. Also, the obtained nanocomposites could induce apoptosis in breast cancer cell line (MCF-7) and the ability of induce apoptosis was in the following order: Fe3O4@SiO2@Al2O3@Ag > Fe3O4@SiO2@Al2O3 > Fe3O4@SiO2@Al2O3@Pd,Ag > Fe3O4@SiO2@Al2O3@Pd.

The selective oxidation of alcohols is an important chemical process with many potential applications in fine-chemical synthesis, however, the catalysts reported so far generally suffer from low activity and poor selectivity. We present here a class of ordered Pd3Pb nanocubes (NCs) with an intermetallic phase and well-defined surface as unique catalysts for selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde. The optimized Pd3Pb NCs exhibit both enhanced activity with the turnover frequency of 191 000 h(-1) and excellent selectivity up to 91.0%, outperforming the Pd3Pb/Pd NCs and Pd3Pb nanoparticles (NPs) as well as Pd NPs. The Pd3Pb NCs show increased activity in the initially consecutive reaction cycles and do not suffer from distinct deactivation thereafter. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy reveals that the high ratio of Pd2+ to Pd-0 in the surface of Pd-Pb NPs enhances the benzaldehyde productivity, and the electronic modification of the Pd3Pb NCs boosts the benzaldehyde selectivity. Attenuated total reflectance infrared spectra further confirms that the weak benzaldehyde absorption on the Pd3Pb surface results in high selectivity of benzaldehyde.

In this work, Al grafted SBA-16 (Al-SBA-16) is converted into a fully crystalline hierarchical mesoporous ZSM-5 zeolite with hydrothermal stability by steam assisted crystallization under controlled conditions. The secondary mesoporosity is due to reorganization and recrystallization events happening upon steaming the precursor. Two mesoporous aluminosilicates (Al-SBA-16s) are used as the precursors of zeolites. The precursors are obtained by post-synthetic Al grafting on the silica walls of SBA-16 with aluminium isopropoxide and sodium aluminate. Mesoporous ZSM-5 zeolites obtained from the Al-SBA-16 precursors and commercial ZSM-5 are characterized using XRD, XRF, FT-IR, TEM, N-2 adsorption, Al-27 and Si-29 MAS NMR, and TPD of NH3. The results indicated the presence of intraparticle mesoporosity in the prepared mesoporous zeolites and they have comparable crystallinity with commercial ZSM-5. Catalytic activity of the synthesized mesoporous zeolites in benzylation of mesitylene is found to be comparatively more than commercial ZSM-5, which shows existence of micro/meso hierarchical structure in the mesoporous ZSM-5 zeolites. The aluminium sources, aluminium isopropoxide and sodium aluminate have a remarkable influence on the textural, acidity, and hydrothermal stability characteristics of the synthesized mesoporous ZSM-5 zeolites.

The ability to grow covalent organic framework (COF) films allows for studying their properties as solid layers and enables the incorporation of these materials into a variety of functional devices. Here, we report on the fabrication of COF films and coatings by electrophoretic deposition (EPD). We demonstrate that the EPD technique is suitable for depositing COFs featuring two- and three-dimensional structures linked by imine or boronate ester bonds, namely, BDT-ETTA COF, COF-300, and COF-5. For the deposition, COF nanoparticle suspensions are prepared by dispersing the as-synthesized bulk materials in solvents with low dielectric constants. Subsequently, two electrodes are immersed into the COF particle suspensions, and upon inducing electric fields ranging from 100 to 900 V cm(-1), COFs are deposited as films on the positively charged electrode. Through EPD, within 2 min, large-area films of up to 25 cm(2) are obtained on smooth or corrugated surfaces. COF films prepared by EPD feature an inherent textural porosity and tunable thickness, demonstrated from 400 nm to 24 mu m. By controlling the deposition parameters such as duration, particle concentration, and applied potential, deposits of precise thickness can be produced. Furthermore, codepositions of different COFs as well as COF/Pt nanoparticles from mixed suspensions are demonstrated. The film morphologies obtained by EPD are shown to be advantageous for catalysis, as demonstrated for sacrificial agent-free photoelectrochemical water reduction. Here, BDT-ETTA COF photocathodes show a strongly increased photocurrent density compared to the respective dense and oriented films. Typical BDT-ETTA COF/Pt nanoparticle hybrid films exhibit photocurrent densities of over 100 mu A cm(-2). The rapid and scalable deposition of COF particles as films and coatings through EPD is a versatile addition to the toolbox of COF film fabrication techniques, allowing for tailoring COF film architectures for desired functionalities.
