Biosurfactants are environment compatible surface-active biomolecules with multifunctional properties which can be utilized in various industries. In this study a biosurfactant producing novel plant growth promoting isolate Pseudomonas guariconensis LE3 from the rhizosphere of Lycopersicon esculentum is presented as biostimulant and biocontrol agent. Biosurfactant extracted from culture was characterized to be mixture of various mono- and di-rhamnolipids with antagonistic activity against Macrophomina phaseolina, causal agent of charcoal rot in diverse crops. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and proton nuclear magnetic resonance (H-1 NMR) analysis confirmed the rhamnolipid nature of biosurfactant. PCR analysis established the presence of genes involved in synthesis of antibiotics diacetylphloroglucinol, phenazine 1-carboxylic acid and pyocyanin, and lytic enzymes chitinase and endoglucanase suggesting biocontrol potential of the isolate. Plant growth promoting activities shown by LE3 were phosphate solubilization and production of siderophores, indole acetic acid (IAA), ammonia and 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate deaminase (ACCD). To assemble all the characteristics of LE3 various bioformuations were developed. Amendment of biosurfactant in bioformulation of LE3 cells improved the shelf life. Biosurfactant amended formulation of LE3 cells was most effective in biocontrol of charcoal rot disease of sunflower and growth promotion in field conditions. The root adhered soil mass of plantlets inoculated with LE3 plus biosurfactant was significantly higher over control. Biosurfactant amended formulation of LE3 cells caused maximum yield enhancement (80.80%) and biocontrol activity (75.45%), indicating that addition of biosurfactant improves the plant-bacterial interaction and soil properties leading to better control of disease and overall improvement of plant health and yield.

The low availability of phosphorus (P) in the soil drastically limits the world productivity of crops such as cotton. In order to contribute sustainably to the solution of this problem, the current study aimed to evaluate the capacity of phosphate-solubilising bacteria to improve plant growth and its relationship with physiological parameters, as well as the shoot P content in cotton plants in a soil with low P availability amended with rock phosphate. The results showed that, of the six plant growth-promoting bacteria strains evaluated under greenhouse conditions, the Rhizobium strain B02 significantly promoted growth, shoot P content and photosynthetic rate. This strain also improved the transpiration rate and the relative content of chlorophyll but without significant differences. Remarkably, Rhizobium sp. B02 had a more significant effect on plant growth compared to the P nutrition. Furthermore, the effect of its inoculation was more pronounced on the roots’ growth compared to the shoot. Finally, application of Rhizobium strain B02 showed the capacity to optimize the use of low-solubility fertilizer as the rock phosphate. These findings could be associated with the metabolic activities of plant growth promotion exhibited by phosphate-solubilising strains, such as phosphate solubilisation, production of indole compounds and siderophores synthesis. In conclusion, this research provides evidence of the biotechnological potential of the Rhizobium genus as phosphate-solubilising bacteria with multiple plant growth-promoting activities capable of improving the plant growth and phosphate nutrition of non-leguminous crops such as cotton in soil with low P availability amended with rock phosphate.

This ratiometric device includes detection section (DS) and reference section (RS), which are equipped on a single FTO electrode. DS incubates with different concentrations of PSA, and RS incubates with a constant concentration of PSA. Thus, the ultrasensitive ratiometric detection of PSA is achieved by the ratio value of photocurrents (DS/RS), reducing the impact of external factors on detection results effectively. This sensor exhibits a dynamic working range between 0.0005-50 ng mL(-1) with a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.00012 ng mL(-1) and a limit of quantification (LOQ) of 0.0004 ng mL(-1). In addition, this sensor has high selectivity, good portability and acceptable detection accuracy in actual samples, which indicates potential applications for detection of disease-related biomarkers.
