The facilitation of redox-neutral reactions by electrochemical injection of holes and electrons, also known as electrochemical catalysis, is a little explored approach that has the potential to expand the scope of electrosynthesis immensely. To systematically improve existing protocols and to pave the way toward new developments, a better understanding of the underlying principles is crucial. In this context, we have studied the Newman-Kwart rearrangement of O-arylthiocarbamates to the corresponding S-aryl derivatives, the key step in the synthesis of thiophenols from the corresponding phenols. This transformation is a particularly useful example because the conventional method requires temperatures up to 300 degrees C, whereas electrochemical catalysis facilitates the reaction at room temperature. A combined experimental-quantum chemical approach revealed several reaction channels and rendered an explanation for the relationship between the structure and reactivity. Furthermore, it is shown how rapid cyclic voltammetry measurements can serve as a tool to predict the feasibility for specific substrates. The study also revealed distinct parallels to photoredox-catalyzed reactions, in which back-electron transfer and chain propagation are competing pathways.

This paper describes a very mild, quick and simple protocol for the synthesis of phenols using CuFe2O4 magnetic nanoparticles as a catalyst. The nanosized catalyst has an average diameter of 17.63 nm. The magnetic nanoparticles were characterized by SEM, EDX, VSM, XRD and TEM analysis. The synthesis of phenols from phenylboronic acids using H2O2 as an oxidant proceeded very well with excellent yields. Heterogeneous catalyst, easy recyclability, mild reaction conditions, short reaction time added as an advantage for the present protocol.

In order to develop a novel herbicide containing the beta-triketone motif, a series of 4-hydroxyl-3-(2-phenoxyacetyl)-pyran-2-one derivatives were designed and synthesized. The bioassay results showed that compound II15 had good pre-emergent herbicidal activity even at a dosage of 187.5 g ha(-1). Moreover, compound II15 showed a broader spectrum of weed control when compared with a commercial herbicide 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D), and displayed good crop safety to Triticum aestivum L. and Zea mays Linn. when applied at 375 g ha(-1) under pre-emergence conditions, which indicated its great potential as a herbicide. More importantly, studying the molecular mode of action of compound II15 revealed that the novel triketone structure is a proherbicide of its corresponding phenoxyacetic acid auxin herbicide, which has a herbicidal mechanism similar to that of 2,4-D. The present work indicates that the 4-hydroxyl-3-(2-phenoxyacetyl)-pyran-2-one motif may be a potential lead structure for further development of novel auxin-type herbicides.

In this approach, low-dimensional silver oxide decorated carbon black nanocomposites (Ag2O/CB NCs) were synthesized by a facile wet-chemical process at low temperature. The prepared composites were characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV/vis), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD). A thin layer of Ag2O/CB NC was deposited on the glassy carbon electrode (GCE) with a conducting binder to produce the working electrode of a chemical sensor. The fabricated chemical sensor was used for the successive in vitro detection of 3-methoxyphenol (3-MP) by an electrochemical method at a lower applied potential. The sensor response towards 3-MP is linear in a logarithmic scale over a large concentration range (0.09 nM to 9.0 mu M). The analytical parameters of the sensor, including good sensitivity (45.7278 mu A mu M-1 cm(-2)), low detection limit (LOD = 9.73 +/- 0.49 pM at a signal to noise ratio of 3), good reliability, good reproducibility, and long-term stability were examined. Therefore, the proposed chemical sensor based on Ag2O/CB NCs/binder/GCE may be a promising sensitive chemical sensor in reliable electrochemical approaches for the broad-scale detection of hazardous and carcinogenic chemicals in the health care and environmental sectors.

The synthesized MgTi2O4.TiO2.Zn2TiO4 nanomaterial was characterized by XRD (X-Ray diffraction), SEM (Scanning electron microscopy), EDS (Energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy), FTIR (Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy) and PL (Photoluminescence) study. Particles size of MgTi2O4.TiO2.Zn2TiO4 nanomaterial was found to be 37.3 nm. PL and PLE (Photoluminescence excitation) spectra are showed several peaks including one red PL at 723 nm, when excited at 320 nm. Nanomaterial was subject to electrochemical sensor study. Thin layer of synthesized MgTi2O4.TiO2.Zn2TiO4 nanomaterials was fabricated onto the glassy carbon electrode (GCE) with conducting binder to result the working electrode of 4-nitrophenylhydrazine (4-NPHyd) sensor, which was applied successively to selectively detect the 4-NPHyd in aqueous phase. The 4-NPHyd chemical sensor exhibited high sensitivity with lower detection limit, long-term stability in chemical environment and improved electrochemical responses during sensing performance. The linearity of calibration plot is obtained over the large linear dynamic range (LDR) from 0.1 nM to 0.1 mM of 4-NPHyd. The sensitivity calculated from the slop of calibration plot (ratio of current to concentration of 4-NPHyd) is 42.7215 mu AmM(-1)cm(-2) with detection limit (DL) of 0.02 +/- 0.001 nM at signal to noise ratio of 3(S/N). Therefore, the chemical sensor based on MgTi2O4.TiO2.Zn2TiO4 nanomaterials may be a promising highly sensitive sensor in electrochemical method for the effective detection of hazardous and carcinogenic chemicals in medical as well as biological sectors.

Guaiacol, one of the main components and a model compound of lignin-derived bio-oil, was transformed into phenol and methylated phenols over a series of supported iron catalysts under atmospheric pressure. CeO2 support was superior to other conventional supports in view of the activity of supported iron catalysts. The effect of iron loading amount on CeO2 supports showed a linear relationship with an iron loading amount up to 3 wt %, which corresponded to monolayer coverage, and then it was almost constant with a further increase of the iron content. The Fe/CeO2 catalyst with 3 wt % iron loading (Fe(3)/CeO2) had higher stability than the catalysts with higher iron loadings. The optimal Fe(3)/CeO2 catalyst showed a 56% phenol yield and an 87% sum yield of phenol and methylated phenols at 673 K under guaiacol/N-2/H-2 = 1/45/135 flow with W/F = 1.0 g.h.mol(total)(-1). The X-ray diffraction (XRD), diffuse reflectance UV-visible (DRUV-vis), Raman, and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) characterizations confirmed that the FeOx species were finely dispersed on the Fe/CeO2 catalyst with <= 3 wt % iron, and higher iron loadings led to formation of Fe2O3 particles in calcined catalysts. Although other supported iron catalysts with 3 wt % iron loading also contained dispersed FeOx species, the reducibility of Fe/CeO2 was higher than that of other supported iron catalysts, which might be related to the higher activity. The XAS characterization of spent catalysts showed that the stable Fe(3)/CeO2 catalyst contained only Fe3+ and Fe2+ species during the reaction, while in the Fe(10)/CeO2 catalyst, the reduction of iron proceeded to a greater extent and Fe3C crystals grew during the reaction. The structure of this monolayer Fe(3)/CeO2 was further characterized by extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Rather than a two-dimensional Fe oxide sheet, a structure composed of dispersed Fe4O6 clusters is suggested for monolayer coverage. The X-ray diffraction (XRD), diffuse reflectance UV-visible (DRUV-vis), Raman, and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) characterizations confirmed that the FeOx species were finely dispersed on the Fe/CeO2 catalyst with <= 3 wt % iron, and higher iron loadings led to formation of Fe2O3 particles in calcined catalysts. Although other supported iron catalysts with 3 wt % iron loading also contained dispersed FeOx species, the reducibility of Fe/CeO2 was higher than that of other supported iron catalysts, which might be related to the higher activity. The XAS characterization of spent catalysts showed that the stable Fe(3)/CeO2 catalyst contained only Fe3+ and Fe2+ species during the reaction, while in the Fe(10)/CeO2 catalyst, the reduction of iron proceeded to a greater extent and Fe3C crystals grew during the reaction. The structure of this monolayer Fe(3)/CeO2 was further characterized by extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Rather than a two-dimensional Fe oxide sheet, a structure composed of dispersed Fe4O6 clusters is suggested for monolayer coverage. The coordinatively unsaturated site (CUS) in the interface between FeOx and reducible CeO2 is suggested to be the active site. Application In Synthesis of m-Methoxyphenol. In order to develop a novel herbicide containing the beta-triketone motif, a series of 4-hydroxyl-3-(2-phenoxyacetyl)-pyran-2-one derivatives were designed and synthesized. The bioassay results showed that compound II15 had good pre-emergent herbicidal activity even at a dosage of 187.5 g ha(-1). Moreover, compound II15 showed a broader spectrum of weed control when compared with a commercial herbicide 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D), and displayed good crop safety to Triticum aestivum L. and Zea mays Linn. when applied at 375 g ha(-1) under pre-emergence conditions, which indicated its great potential as a herbicide. More importantly, studying the molecular mode of action of compound II15 revealed that the novel triketone structure is a proherbicide of its corresponding phenoxyacetic acid auxin herbicide, which has a herbicidal mechanism similar to that of 2,4-D. The present work indicates that the 4-hydroxyl-3-(2-phenoxyacetyl)-pyran-2-one motif may be a potential lead structure for further development of novel auxin-type herbicides.
