We aim at encapsulating fragrances made of a variety of lipophilic species to slow down their diffusion. Our strategy is to develop capsules by polymerizing the water intermediate phase of an oil-in-water-in-oil double emulsion. In other terms, our system consists in a direct emulsion of fragrance (O1) in a water phase (W) containing monomer, initiator, and cross-linker. To obtain the double emulsion, this direct emulsion, stabilized by a hydrophilic surfactant, is itself dispersed in an external lipophilic solvent used in perfumery (O2) and stabilized by a lipophilic surfactant. Polymerization of the intermediate water phase aims at obtaining a 3D network. Differently from nowadays-proposed capsules, this strategy allows polymerization only taking place in the water phase rather in the phase containing the fragrance. Moreover, the obtained 3D network is supposed to play the role of an effective barrier limiting the diffusion of the inner lipophilic species towards either the external solvent or air. Such an approach implies the combination of a formulation step to elaborate the double emulsion using two antagonistic surfactants, a hydrophilic one and a lipophilic one, and of the polymerization of the intermediate phase. Insertion of the polymerizable species in the double emulsion shall not destabilize it. Some monomers exhibiting interfacial affinity and interfering with the formulation of the double emulsion have to be avoided. By varying the nature of the monomers and the cross-linker to monomer ratio, capsules with high encapsulation efficiencies and with various mechanical properties have been obtained.

Dielectric materials play a crucial role in 5G communication technological applications such as printed circuit board (PCB) high-frequency substrate materials. Unfortunately, the fabrication of desirable dielectric performance in organic-inorganic composites is a great challenge because of lack of good interfacial compatibility and uniform dispersion between fillers and polymer. In this work, silicon dioxide (SiO2) was synchronously functionalized by gamma-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (MPS, s-SiO2) and 1,2-polybutadiene (PB, v-SiO2), which were then used as fillers to fabricate the s-SiO2/polyolefin or v-SiO2/polyolefin laminates. All the v-SiO2/polyolefin laminates exhibited better dielectric, thermal and mechanical properties than those of s-SiO2/polyolefin laminates under the same filler content. Specially, the 50 wt% v-SiO2/polyolefin laminate displays a low dielectric constant (3.42) and loss (3.55 x 10-3) at 10 GHz. Meanwhile, it also shows good stability of dielectric properties in a wide range of high-frequency. This work is conducive to develop laminates with superior dielectric properties and apply to PCB high-frequency substrate field.

Methods are reported for the efficient assembly of a series of phenol-derived propiolates, including the parent system 56, and their Au(I)-catalyzed cyclization (intramolecular hydroarylation) to give the corresponding coumarins (e.g., 1). Simple syntheses of natural products such as ayapin (144) and scoparone (145) have been realized by such means, and the first of these subject to single-crystal X-ray analysis. A related process is described for the conversion of propargyl ethers such as 156 into the isomeric 2H-chromene precocene I (159), a naturally occurring inhibitor of juvenile hormone biosynthesis.

A new class of actinide complexes [(L)An(N{SiMe3}(2))(3)] (An = Th or U) (Th1-Th3 and U1-U3) supported by highly nucleophilic seven-membered N-heterocyclic iminato ligands were synthesized and fully characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. These complexes were successfully exploited as powerful catalysts for the addition of alcohols to carbodiimides to yield the corresponding desirable isourea products at room temperature with short reaction times and excellent yields. Thorough stoichiometric, thermodynamic, and kinetic studies were carried out, allowing us to propose a plausible mechanism for the catalytic reaction.

A miscible-immiscible deep eutectic solvent (DES) containing monoethanolamine/4-methoxyphenol was used as an extraction solvent in a homogeneous liquid-liquid microextraction (HLLME). The method was used to preconcentrate chlorobenzenes in water samples followed by separating and analyzing them by gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy (GC-MS). A special feature of the new extraction method is that a green miscible solvent was used as an extractant in the HLLME method. The developed extraction technique provided enrichment factors in the range of 13.1-42.1 for extraction from only 1.0 mL of the aqueous sample solution. The effects of various experimental parameters were investigated and optimized. The optimal conditions were as follows: vortex time: 30.0 s, bubbling CO2 gas: 1.0 min, salt concentration: 5.0% w/v, rate and time of centrifuge: 4000.0 rpm and 3.0 min, respectively, and DES volume: 30.0 mu L. The limit of detections and the limit of quantifications for the four targeted analytes varied from 0.01-0.15 and 0.025-0.5 mu g L-1, respectively. The precision and long-term precision tests for the developed method were found to be less than 11.0%. Two real samples, including toilet air freshener and car perfume, were analyzed. The applied DES in the HLLME method provides a fast means of sample preparation for environmental aqueous sample solutions. (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

This study aimed to characterize the antioxidant potential, bioactive and volatile compounds of the stones from fruits of Cornus mas. Both fresh and roasted stones show a high antioxidant potential (166.48-509.74 mu mol TE/g dw stones), which significantly depends on the cultivars. The roasted stones preserved 43.6% (DPPH; ‘Raciborski’) to 97.2% (FRAP; ‘Alesha’) of the antioxidant activity of the non-roasted stones. In the stones, two iridoids and ellagic acid were determined. During roasting, loganic acid remained stable, whereas cornuside was completely degraded. The analyses showed a 30-fold increase in the concentration of ellagic acid and in the formation of two of its derivatives. The major aroma compound of the roasted stones was furfural, but we also identified 18 pyrazine derivatives. This study is the first attempt to valorize Cornelian cherry stones via roasting. The roasted stones can be a coffee substitute, or aromatic and bioactive additions to cereal coffees.

COA of Formula: C7H8O2. I found the field of Chemistry very interesting. Saw the article Photoinduced DNA Interstrand Cross-Linking by Benzene Derivatives: Leaving Groups Determine the Efficiency of the Cross-Linker published in 2021.0, Reprint Addresses Peng, XH (corresponding author), Univ Wisconsin, Dept Chem & Biochem, Milwaukee, WI 53211 USA.; Peng, XH (corresponding author), Univ Wisconsin, Milwaukee Inst Drug Discovery, Milwaukee, WI 53211 USA.. We have synthesized and characterized two small libraries of 2-OMe or 2-NO2-benzene analogues 2a-i and 3a-i containing a wide variety of leaving groups. Irradiation of these compounds at 350 nm generated benzyl radicals that were spontaneously oxidized to benzyl cations directly producing DNA interstrand cross-links (ICLs). Compounds with a 2-methoxy substituent showed a faster cross-linking reaction rate and higher ICL efficiency than the corresponding 2-nitro analogues. Apart from the aromatic substituent, the benzylic leaving groups greatly affected DNA cross-linking efficiency. Higher ICL yields were observed for compounds with OCH3 (3b), OCH2Ph (3d), or Ph3P+ (3i) as leaving groups than those containing OAc (3a), NMe2 (3e), morpholine (3f), OCH2CH=CH2 (3c), SPh (3g), or SePh (3h). The heat stability study of the isolated ICL products indicated that dGs were the preferred alkylation sites in DNA for the benzyl cations produced from 2a-i, 3c, and 3e-i while 3a (L = OAc), 3b (L = OMe), and 3d (L = OCH2Ph) showed a similar photoreactivity toward dGs and dAs. Although the photogenerated benzyl cations alkylated dG, dC, and dA, ICL assay with variation of DNA sequences showed that the ICL reaction occurred with opposing dG/dC but not with staggered dA/dA.

Volatile compounds of raw and cooked adzuki beans under three cooking methods namely frying, roasting, and boiling were extracted and identified. The odorants in raw beans changed from green and grassy to roasted and nutty in fried and roasted beans. Roasted adzuki beans had the greatest number of volatile compounds and best flavor properties. Because volatiles improve biscuit flavor profiles, biscuits were prepared in which wheat flour was substituted with adzuki bean flour and/or millet flour. The effects of grain flours on the sensory acceptability and aroma of biscuits were evaluated. Descriptive sensory analysis showed that the adzuki bean-millet biscuit had the best sensory quality. Correlation of volatile compounds, biscuit sensory attributes, and biscuit samples showed that maltol contributed to the caramel-like aroma of adzuki bean-millet biscuits. Adzuki bean and millet flours have potential in the development of biscuits that meet flavor and nutritional requirements.

Gold-catalyzed reactions of conjugated haloacetylenes are well known and usually result in the formation of addition or dimerization products. Herein, we report a gold-catalyzed reaction of non-conjugated- haloacetylenes, which leads exclusively to the halogenated cyclization products. Remarkable is the gold-catalyzed reaction of tritylhaloacetylenes to haloindene derivatives, as mechanistic studies reveal that an 1,2-aryl shift occurs in the initially formed gold complex. The potential functionalization at the halogen atom and the wide scope of these cyclization reactions make them an attractive method for the construction of cyclic systems.
