3,4-Fused tricyclic indole frameworks are found in various bioactive natural products and pharmaceuticals. In order to gain new insights into the effect of the pi-pi stacking interaction of the indole ring with the phenoxyl radical moiety as seen in the active form of galactose oxidase, we have prepared Ni(s) complexes of a methoxy substituted salen-type ligand containing a pendent indole ring on the dinitrogen chelate backbone and characterized their one-electron oxidized forms. The X-ray crystal structure analysis and the other physicochemical experiments of the Ni(s) complex revealed no significant intramolecular interaction of the indole ring with the coordination plane. On the other hand, the X-ray crystal structures of the oxidized Ni(ii) complex exhibited the pi-pi stacking interaction of the indole ring mainly with one of the two phenolate moieties. While the phenoxyl radical electron was delocalized on the two phenolate moieties in the Ni(s)-salen coordination plane, the phenolate moiety in close contact with the indole moiety was considered to be the initial oxidation locus, indicating that the indole ring interacted with the phenoxyl radical by pi-pi stacking. The UV vis NIR spectrum of the oxidized Ni(ii) complex with the pendent indole ring was different from that of the complex without the side chain indole ring, but the differences were rather small in comparison with the oxidized Cu(ii)-salen complexes with the pi-pi stacking interaction of the indole ring. Such differences are due to the electronic structure difference, the localized radical electron on one of the phenolate moieties in the oxidized Cu(ii) complexes being more favorable for then pi-pi stacking interaction.

Adsorption of dipeptide L-alanyl-L-tryptophan on gold colloidal nanoparticles studied by surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy

Surface adsorption of a dipeptide L-alanyl-L-tryptophan (Ala-Trp) on gold nanoparticles reduced by citrate (CT) and borohydride (BH) ions was investigated by a surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) technique. Two distinct SERS spectra of Ala-Trp depending on the types of gold nanoparticles were observed, and the vibrational assignments were based on the density functional theory simulations and the previous SERS results of Trp. Ala-Trp mainly adsorbs through the amine group on CT gold nanoparticles with a perpendicular orientation of the indole ring to the surface. In contrast, the adsorption occurs via the pi electrons of the indole ring on the BH gold surfaces while maintaining a flat geometry of the indole ring to the surface. The amide I band of Ala-Trp was observed only with the CT gold colloids in acidic and neutral conditions where partial surface adsorption via the amide group is expected. (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V. Microwave-assisted synthesis and evaluation of indole derivatives as potential anthelmintic agents

An efficient method is developed and exploited for the synthesis of indole derivatives via microwave-assisted technology. By considering the advantage microwave synthesis in terms of high efficient energy, indole derivatives are prepared. In the current study, the Schiff’s bases are first synthesized by reaction of 1H-indole-2,3-dione (isatin) with various substituted anilines in presence of acetic acid under microwave irradiation. Then the Mannich bases are produced by condensation of Schiff bases with different secondary amines in the presence of formaldehyde. The newly synthesized compounds are characterized by TLC report and spectral data followed by evaluation for anthelmintic activity against Pheretima posthuma. Albendazole is used as standard drug for comparative study. The titled compounds are screened for anthelmintic activity at the concentration of 10, 20 and 50 mg/ml. The anthelmintic effect of standard drug Albendazole is also evaluated at 10 mg/ml. The results of present study indicate that some of the tested compounds exhibit significant anthelmintic activity in dose dependent manner.
