Recent studies have shown that metabolites produced by microbes can be considered as mediators of host-microbial interactions. In this study, we examined the production of tryptophan metabolites by Bifidobacterium strains found in the gastrointestinal tracts of humans and other animals. Indole-3-lactic acid (ILA) was the only tryptophan metabolite produced in bifidobacteria culture supernatants. No others, including indole-3-propionic acid, indole-3-acetic acid, and indole-3-aldehyde, were produced. Strains of bifidobacterial species commonly isolated from the intestines of human infants, such as Bifidobacterium longum subsp. longum, Bifidobacterium longum subsp. infantis, Bifidobacterium breve, and Bifidobacterium bifidum, produced higher levels of ILA than did strains of other species. These results imply that infant-type bifidobacteria might play a specific role in host-microbial cross-talk by producing ILA in human infants.

Herbivore-induced plant volatiles (HIPVs) can mediate tritrophic interactions by attracting natural enemies of insect herbivores such as predators and parasitoids. Whether HIPVs can also mediate tritrophic interactions by influencing the attractiveness of the herbivores themselves remains unknown. We explored this question by studying the role of indole, a common HIPV in the plant kingdom. We found that herbivory-induced indole increases the recruitment of the solitary endoparasitoid Microplitis rufiventris to maize plants that are induced by Spodoptera littoralis caterpillars. Surprisingly, however, indole reduces parasitoid recruitment when the caterpillars themselves are present on the plants. Further experiments revealed that indole exposure renders S. littoralis caterpillars unattractive to M. rufiventris, leading to an overall reduction in attractiveness of plant-herbivore complexes. Furthermore, indole increases S. littoralis resistance and decreases M. rufiventris parasitization success. S. littoralis caterpillars are repelled by indole in the absence of M. rufiventris but specifically stop avoiding the volatile in the presence of the parasitoid. Our study shows how an HIPV can undermine tritrophic interactions by reducing the suitability and attractiveness of caterpillars to parasitoids.

C3-Alkylation of indoles and oxindoles by alcohols by means of borrowing hydrogen methodology

Transition metal-catalyzed C3-alkylation of indoles and oxindoles with nonderivatized alcohols, by means of borrowing hydrogen (BH) activation of the alcohol substrates, avoids the use of environmentally unfriendly alkylating agents. Only water is formed as the byproduct, thus making the BH process atom-economical and environmentally benign. Diverse homogeneous and heterogeneous transitionmetal catalysts, indoles and oxindoles, and nonderivatized alcohols can be used for this transformation, hence rendering the BH process promising for replacing those procedures that use traditional alkylating agents. Although some earlier literature is discussed, this review mainly covers the literature published since 2015. (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
