Novel arginine-functionalized starch-based nanoparticles (Arg-SNPs) were synthesized and characterized by Fourier transforms infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDAX), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and thermos-gravimetric analyses (TGA) techniques. Arg-SNP was used as a highly efficient and macromolecule-supported recyclable nanocatalyst for the one-pot reaction between thiourea and iodine with various substituted methylcarbonyls to afford the corresponding diheteroaryl thioethers in high-to-quantitative yields. First generation dendron bis-1,2-(4-acetylphenylethynyl)-4,5-dimethoxybenzene with a photo cleavable linkage to (t-butyloxycarbonyl-gamma-aminobutyric acid (t-Boc-GABA) was synthesized for photo release study to apply for drug delivery. Both the divergent method from the core, 1,2-dimethoxybenzene and the convergent method from p-hydroxyacetophenone were not successful to generate the final dendron product. The dendron with caged GABA was successfully synthesized via the convergent method by attaching the model drug GABA on p-hydroxyacetophenone before the final Sonogashira coupling on 1,2-dimethoxybenzene according to the modified convergent method.

Herein, an organocatalytic method for photochemical C-O bond cleavage of lignin systems is reported. The use of photochemistry enabled fragmentation of the ss-O-4 linkage, the primary linkage in lignin, provides the fragmentation products in good to high yields. The approach was merged with reported oxidation conditions in a one-pot, two-step platform without any intermediary purification, suggesting its high fidelity. The future utility of the organocatalytic method was illustrated by applying the visible light-mediated protocol to continuous flow processing.

Qing Dai (Naturalis Indigo) is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) used as a topical agent in moderate psoriasis, targeting interleukin-17 (IL-17). In this study, it was prepared from the aerial parts of Strobilanthes cusia. Three undescribed indole alkaloid derivatives, indigodoles A-C, along with seven known compounds were isolated from this preparation of Qing Dai and their structures were elucidated from spectroscopic data, including NMR, MS, UV, IR, optical rotation, and CD. As well, most compounds were tested against IL-17. Indigodole C and tryptanthrin could significantly inhibit IL-17 production of Th17 cells. In addition, indigodole A and indirubin showed notably anti-IL-17 gene expression in dose-dependent effects without cytotoxicities toward Th17 and Jurkat cells, respectively. Overall, our studies indicate that the aforementioned indole alkaloids could contribute to anti-IL 17 properties of Qing Dai.

Mono- or di-substituted imidazole derivatives were synthesized using a one-pot, two-step strategy. All imidazole derivatives were tested for AChE and BChE inhibition and showed nanomolar activity similar to that of the test compound donepezil and higher than that of tacrine. Structure activity relationship studies, docking studies to on X-ray crystal structure of AChE with PDB code 1B41, and adsorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion (ADME) predictions were performed. The synthesized core skeleton was bound to important regions of the active site of AChE such as the peripheral anionic site (PAS), oxyanion hole (OH), and anionic subsite (AS). Selectivity of the reported test compounds was calculated and enzyme kinetic studies revealed that they behave as competitive inhibitors, while two of the test compounds showed noncompetitive inhibitory behavior. ADME predictions revealed that the synthesized molecules might pass through the blood brain barrier and intestinal epithelial barrier and circulate freely in the blood stream without binding to human serum albumin. While the toxicity of one compound on the WS1 (skin fibroblast) cell line was 1790 mu M, its toxicity on the SH-SY5Y (neuroblastoma) cell line was 950 mu M.

Aromatic voltage stabilizers can improve the dielectric properties of cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE); however, their poor compatibility with XLPE hinders their practical application. Improving the compatibility of aromatic voltage stabilizers with XLPE has, therefore, become a new research goal. Herein 1-(4-vinyloxy)phenylethenone (VPE) was prepared and characterized. It can be grafted onto polyethylene molecules during the cross-linking processes to promote stability of the aromatic voltage stabilizers in XLPE. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy confirmed that VPE was successfully grafted onto XLPE, and effectively inhibited thermal migration. Thermogravimetric analysis showed that the grafted VPE/XLPE composite exhibits a better thermal stability than a VPE/PE blend composite. Evaluation of the electrical properties showed that the breakdown strength and electrical tree initiation voltage of the VPE/XLPE composite were increased by 15.5% and 39.6%, respectively, when compared to those of bare XLPE. After thermal aging, the breakdown strength and electrical tree initiation voltage of the VPE/XLPE composite were increased by 9.4% and 25.8%, respectively, in comparison to those of bare XLPE, which indicates that the grafted voltage stabilizer can effectively inhibit its migration and enhance the stability of the composite material.

Aim: Mesenchymal-epithelial transition factor (c-Met)/ HGF overactivation is involved in diverse human cancers. Materials & methods: Herein, we report the synthesis and biological evaluation of thiomethylpyridine-linked triazolotriazines as c-Met kinase inhibitors. Results: Compounds 10b and 11e were more potent than crizotinib on HepG2 cells with IC50 values of 0.74 and 0.71 mu M in theMTT assay, respectively. In this study, we aimed to investigate the photodiode properties of the chalcone substitutedphthalocyanine complex due to the important physical properties of the phthalocyanine and chalcone compounds. For this purpose, in the first step, a heterocyclic chalcone compound (HC) bearing a pyridine and hydroxyl group was obtained from the reaction of 40-hydroxyacetophenone with pyridine-3 aldehyde. In the second step, the chalcone-substituted phthalonitrile compound (HCA) was obtained by interacted 4-nitroftalonitrile with the compound HC in the presence of K2CO3 in DMF in an argon atmosphere. The new chalcone substituted metallo-phthalocyanine (HCA-Co) was synthesized from the reaction of compound HCA with Co (II) acetate according to heating of solid phase method under an inert atmosphere. The structure of HC and HCA-Co were fully characterized by using H-1, and C-13-APT NMR, FTIR, elemental analysis, UV-Vis spectroscopy. The HCP-Co thin-film planar heterojunction diode was prepared. The organic layer was deposited onto the p-Si substrate to obtain an Al/p-si/phthalocyanine(HCP-Co)/Al diode. The current (I)voltage (V) characteristics of heterojunction diode was measured under dark and illuminated conditions (20-100 mW/cm(2)) at room temperature. The electrical characteristics of the device were measured. The ideal factor value was found to be 5.20 and according to this value, the diode exhibits non-ideal behavior. The frequency dependence of capacitance and the role of interface states were examined. The results showed that chalcone substituted metallo-phthalocyanine has a photodiode and photocapacitor characteristic. Benzodiazepines derivatives are nitrogen heterocyclic compounds that have various industrial, synthetic, and medicinal applications. Therefore, its potential fully justifies every effort towards the improvement of new, selective, and competent production of these heterocyclic compounds. The novelty of this study encompasses the synthesis of new hydroxylated analogs of 1,5-benzodiazepine together with the evaluation of their biological potential as antioxidants and antifungals candidates. Additionally, the reported antifungal activity against fungi of the Sporothrix schenckii complex inaugurates an unprecedented property for this class of compounds. The results of biological activities assays suggest that the novel 2,7-dimethyl-2,4-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)-2,3-dihydro1H-1,5-benzodiazepine possesses a high antifungal activity against all fungal strains evaluated of the Sporothrix genus and outstanding total antioxidant capacity. Besides, in silico studies have evidenced that the hydroxylated derivatives have the best aqueous solubility and cell permeability profile, which makes them superior in comparison with the commercial antifungal itraconazole, a drug commonly used in the treatment of sporotrichosis.

Selective hydroxylation of different phenylboronic acids to phenols was successfully carried out by using Cu nanoparticles-enzyme hybrid catalysts in water and room temperature. Different Cu-enzyme hybrids containing Cu(II), Cu(I) and Cu(0) nanoparticles species respectively were tested on the monohydroxylation of phenylboronic acid under these mild conditions being hybrids containing Cu(0)NPs the best catalysts, with total selectivity and formation of phenol as unique product. Also, the addition of hydrogen peroxide or the increase of reaction temperature were tested but did not improved these results. The substrate scope was also demonstrated and the Cu(0)NPs hybrid showed excellent results in the monohydroxylation of differento-, m-, p-substituted phenylboronic acid with final yields >95 %. This catalyst showed excellent recyclability after 5 cycles of use.
