A mixture of isonicotinic acid (1.23 g.) and o-C6H4(NH2)2 (1 g.) is heated on a paraffin bath to 250° (20 min.), cooled, and dissolved in dilute HCl; H2O (50 cc.) is added and the solution is made alk. with NH3. The precipitate is filtered off, dissolved in EtOH, and reprecipitated with H2O giving 2-(pyrid-4-yl)benzimidazole (72%), m. 214°.
