The synthesis of (-)-(R)-7-azatryptophan (I) from com. available 7-azaindole is described. The key step involved the diastereoselective alkylation of the bornylideneaminoacetate II with 1-(tert-butoxycarbonyl-3-(iodomethyl)-7-azaindole.
