Herein, the authors report a chiral phosphoric acid-catalyzed intermol. C2 Friedel-Crafts alkylation reaction between ortho-alkynylnaphthols I (R = H, 6-Me, 7-Br, etc., R1 = t-Bu, Ph) and various 3-substituted indoles II (R2 = H, 4-MeC6H4, CH2CN, etc., R3 = H, 5-Br, 6-Me, etc., R4 = H, Me, R5 = H, Me, Ph), affording axially chiral alkenes III and IV with up to 93% yield (E/Z >; 20:1) and up to 98% ee under mild reaction condition. Other substituted derivatives could also be tolerated in this system, giving the corresponding axially chiral alkenes with high yields and in excellent enantioselectivity.
